アルバム制作の経緯

1985 on this day “The Family” album was released!
I want to express a deeper appreciation. not only for the music on this record ,but to what I feel represents much more than the sum of its parts . I’ll go back a little and explain.
アルバム『The Family』がリリースされた1985年のこの日！
私は、このアルバムに収録されている音楽だけでなく、その作品の持つ素晴らしさをより深く理解してもらいたいと思うの。少しさかのぼって説明するわ。

In 1985 Prince and I had been watching many black and white films. We’d get VHS tapes sent to us from various friends some of The thin man series with William Powell and Myrna Loy or the Philadelphia Story with Kathrine Hepburn , Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart to name a few. Movie nights would fill us with wonder and romance.
We spoke a lot about how we envisioned the Family art work and visual representation could be.That led us to my art book of black and white Horst P. Horst photographs and my love of his work.

One particular famous photo being the iconic 20th century piece “The Mainbocher Corset”written up as an erotically charged mystery in 1939, and still felt that way in 1985. We decided that this was the theme we’d navigate.
特に有名な写真は、20世紀を象徴する作品『マインボッチャーのコルセット』で、1939年にエロティックなミステリーとして脚光を浴びたの。私たちはこのテーマで作品を制作することに決めたわ。

We wanted a Horst photo!
we wondered if Horst was still alive and taking photographs of any kind and To our utter amazement we heard that he was in fact, taking photos and would be able to shoot the band . Within a week Horst had flown from France with his team of grips and assistants to help him with the shoot.

ホルストはまだ存命で、何か写真を撮っているのだろうかと調べたら、驚いたことに彼は今も写真を撮っていたので、バンドを撮影することができるだろうかと聞いたの。すると一週間もしないうちに、ホルストはフランスから撮影を手伝ってくれる彼のスタッフチームとアシスタントを連れて飛んできてくれたの。

アートワークの撮影の思い出

They set the scenes to his liking and then the maticulous lighting and pre photos to guide him through the shots. This took hours and hours. Then we were called in to the scene.
彼らは彼の好みに合わせてシーンをセッティングし、撮影をガイドするために綿密なライティングと前撮りを行った。これには何時間もかかった。そして私たちは現場に呼ばれた。

Paul and I were placed delicately close together for the first shot. The front album art is perfectly structured and navigated by Horst.
It’s the Horst P.Horst lighting, setting and the iconic portrait photo that I wanted to acknowledge in its glory and beauty . We are forever frozen in a Horst moment in time . To this day I’m still in awe that we were part of history.

I heard that thismay have been his last portrait shot.So, I leave you with a little erotically charged mystery.. “the Scremas Of Passion was the first single of the Family record and went to #9 the R&B charts. In any case that it charted at all was a testament to the sum of its parts im referring to .
これが彼の最後のポートレート写真になったかもしれないと聞いた。「The Scremas Of Passion」はザ・ファミリーのファースト・シングルで、R&Bチャート9位を記録したわ。この曲がチャートにランクインしたことは、私が言ったように、この曲が持つ素晴らしい音楽性を証明するものであったわね。
