今日は3月21日、別名"3121の日"です。17年前の今日、プリンスはNPGレコードから31枚目のアルバムをリリースし、ユニバーサルミュージックから「1アルバム契約」で販売されました。
何度も言うように、このアルバムは私にとって身近な存在で、プリンスの下で働いていた時期の中で一番良い時期だったのです。特別な時間だったことは間違いないです。
そこで『3121』が制作された当時のちょっとした楽しいエピソードを紹介します。
ある日、私はシカゴから3121のハウスに向かいました。
到着すると「プリンスはリハーサルをしているから、パフォーマンス・スペースに入って」と言われました。部屋に入ると僕とプリンスとバンドだけで他に誰もいませんでした。
僕は近くのテーブルに座っていると、プリンスとバンドはアルバム『3121』からの「Satisfied」のリハーサルを始めました。この曲を聴いたことがある人はわかると思うけど、俗に言う「セクシー・プリンス」な1曲。この日、観客の中でただ一人だった僕は、この曲が自分のためにあるような気がしてならなかった。
それは、プリンスが僕を誘惑しようとしていると思ったからではありません(笑)。でも、プリンスには、彼と特別なつながりがあるように感じさせる演奏の方法があったんです。それが1万人のアリーナであろうと、自分ひとりであろうと。
彼はいつも自分のパフォーマンスとその瞬間に没頭していて、演奏に夢中にならずにはいられませんでした。彼と目を合わせるのが嫌になるくらい、親密な関係でした(笑)。短い時間でしたが、今でも大切にしています。
写真は『3121』のパフォーマンススペースで、オレンジ色のクラウド・ギターが置いてあるのだけど彼は全く使用しなかったと思います。そこにあったんです。
この写真は私か(写真家の)アフシン・シャヒディ(Afshin Shahidi)が撮ったものかもしれませんが、本当に覚えていません。3121の家の写真はたくさんあって、すべてがぼやけてしまうんだ。
3/21の日、おめでとう。
3121ハウスとは、NBAのカルロス・ブルーザーがからプリンスが借りていたLAある別荘の事です。

It's 3/21 aka 3121 day! 17 years ago today Prince released his 31st album on NPG Records and distributed, under a "one-album deal", by Universal Music.
As I have said many times, this album is near and dear to me as it was the best period of time I had while working for Prince. It was a special time for sure.
So here is a small but fun anecdote from the 3121 era:One day I was arriving at the 3121 house from Chicago.
I was told Prince was rehearsing, and to go on in to the performance space. It was just me and Prince and the band. No one else in the room.I sat down at a nearby table and Prince and the band proceeded to rehearse "Satisfied" off the 3121 album.Now, if you have heard the song, it's one of those "Sexy Prince" songs, as they say. And as the only person in the audience for this particular performance, I couldn't help but feel like the song was for me.
Not because I thought Prince was trying to seduce me lol, far from it. But just that Prince had this way of performing that made you feel like you had a special connection with him. Whether it was an arena of 10,000 people or just you.He was always so in to his performances and being in that moment that you couldn't help but get carried away with it. I almost didn't want to make eye contact with him lol, it was that intimate. It was a brief moment but I still cherish it.
Photo is from the 3121 performance space with an orange Cloud Guitar that I don't think he wound up using at all. But it was there.
Photo possibly taken by me or Afshin Shahidi, I really don't remember. I have SO many photos of the 3121 house that it all blurs together. 🙂 I hope that the estate will let me put together an extended version of 3121 with all the sketches, previous versions, outtakes, and iterations of the album art.Happy 3/21 day!
